Streetworks 2013

Here's my piece for this year's Streetworks project. Every year East End Main Street asks artists to contribute a new piece of art celebrating the east end of Charleston, WV. My piece pays tribute to the Kearse Theater, which was located on Summers Street in downtown Charleston and offered live shows and movies during the 60 years it was standing. It was torn down shortly before I was born, but I fell in love with the design of the building while looking at old photographs of Charleston.

Just like last years' project, the 2013 Streetworks pieces will be made into circular metal signs that hang on light posts all throughout the east end. Here's my piece from last year displayed on its post on Washington Street:

I did quite a bit of research on the Kearse Theater, and if you want to see pictures of it or find out more info I would recommend the page MyWVhome.com, which has an absolutely amazing collection of old Charleston photos.
